Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has made bold statements addressing the protests following the death of cultural icon Zubeen Garg. During a media interaction, Sarma suggested that his resignation could immediately quell half of the ongoing protests, asserting that appointing Gaurav Gogoi as Chief Minister would resolve the remaining issues.
Sarma emphasized that the current agitation is not genuinely aimed at seeking justice for Zubeen Garg, stating, “This movement is not about giving justice to Zubeen.” He distinguished between Zubeen’s true fans, who supported him during his lifetime, and a newer group of individuals who he claims had previously criticized the singer. He called upon these genuine admirers to join the protests for the right reasons.
The Chief Minister also stressed his responsibility to support the people amid challenges, particularly referring to recent violence in Baksa, which forced many local youths to flee. He encouraged those individuals to return, reassuring them that no action would be taken against those who voluntarily approach the police to provide statements.
Sarma accused some in the Baksa region of being provoked by sensational media reports, stating that certain outlets disseminated exaggerated stories, escalating tensions unnecessarily. In response to environmental concerns raised, he clarified that no trees had been cut down, declaring, “Every tree is alive and well. I personally guaranteed Zubeen that the trees would be preserved.” He labeled the reports about tree felling as false and misleading.
In his commitment to honoring Zubeen’s legacy, the Chief Minister announced plans to complete the artist’s unfinished works, including the establishment of music schools and colleges in every constituency, as well as the erection of a statue of Zubeen Garg.
Addressing the legal aspect, Sarma reaffirmed his faith in the judiciary, stating that even if the government makes mistakes, the judiciary remains reliable. He noted that the High Court is already involved in the investigation and that a police report would soon be submitted. He urged the people of Assam to be patient and have confidence in the ongoing judicial processes regarding Zubeen Garg’s case, which is set to be heard in a Fast Track Court.
