Unleashing Adventure: How This Bold Couple Transformed Their Lives by Traveling 160,000 km Around the World in Their Land Rover
When 28-year-olds Nick Chazee and Mathilde Vougny set out to explore the world three years ago, they chose an unconventional approach: traveling in their Land Rover. Both seasoned professionals-Chazee in tech and Vougny at the United Nations-frequently traveled for work, but these experiences only fueled their desire to embark on a grander adventure. “Anytime we had free time, we would travel, even if it was just five hours from home,” Vougny shared. This passion soon transformed into a dream of traveling full-time, prompting them to envision a journey spanning countries from Turkey to Central Asia, and even Singapore.
Funding their ambitious trip took nearly two years of preparation. Initially, Chazee and Vougny financed their travels entirely from their savings. However, as they documented their journey on social media, they unexpectedly found themselves earning income from their growing online presence. “This life is the dream. It’s so much fun, and it’s freedom every day,” Chazee expressed. Interestingly, the couple had not planned to monetize their travel content right away. “We were making videos for friends and family, with no pressure,” Vougny noted. Remarkably, as their audience grew, so did their financial support, allowing them to continue their journey.
Their annual expenses average around $41,000, primarily covering fuel, vehicle maintenance, Wi-Fi, streaming subscriptions, visas, and shipping their Land Rover when flying. By eschewing traditional living expenses like rent and utility bills, their nomadic lifestyle has become far more economical than their previous life. Though they face challenges with logistics-shipping their vehicle can be costly, averaging about $6,000 annually-they’ve adapted by booking last-minute flights. “We literally buy the plane ticket the same day we want to leave,” Chazee explained, emphasizing how this strategy saves them from the costs associated with rescheduling flights.
Daily life on the road is made comfortable with their specially equipped Land Rover, which includes a 65-liter water tank, shower, dual-fuel stove, and fridge. However, extreme temperatures have tested their setup. Chazee shared that in freezing Alaska, they enjoyed the warmth provided by a diesel heater, while hot nights in tropical regions often left them uncomfortably sweaty.
The couple’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. A significant hurdle occurred after shipping their Land Rover to Australia, which cost about $7,000, only for the engine to break down shortly after arrival. Fortunately, a local man offered assistance, leading to a memorable 21-day stay filled with mutual support and camaraderie. Despite the bumps along the way, the couple remains grateful for the global community they’ve built through their travels. “People are always welcoming and care for our car as much as we do,” Vougny remarked.
Every new country visited invites a small personal ritual: attaching a local flag to their vehicle, marking their passage. Vougny fondly recalled an encounter in Bolivia with a cautious local who feared they were there to steal his llamas. These genuine interactions form the most cherished memories of their travels. To date, more than 300 people have opened their homes to the couple, whom they keep in touch with for future visits.
Though Nick and Mathilde plan to conclude their current adventure in two years, they’re already considering a new, larger vehicle for further exploration and a potential home base to host other travelers. “We hope to give back what we received on this trip,” Vougny shared, indicating that their journey, far from being just a series of destinations, is also about building lasting relationships and community.
