Tata Trusts has reappointed Venu Srinivasan as a trustee for life, a decision made unanimously just ahead of his term’s expiration on October 23. Sources note that according to past practices, a unanimous decision is required for both new appointments and renewals that lead to lifetime tenures.
One insider stated, “Renewal, which would lead to a lifetime commitment, requires unanimous approval.” However, another source contends that the reappointment should be seen as automatic for all trustees. They referenced the minutes from a joint meeting of the trustees of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and the Sir Ratan Tata Trust held on October 17, 2024, which indicated that any trustee reaching the end of their term would be automatically reappointed without limits on tenure.
The resolution stipulates that any trustee voting against this renewal would be considered in violation of their commitment to Tata Trusts and unfit for their role. Furthermore, a breach of this commitment would result in a reevaluation of all past resolutions, including the appointment of Noel Tata as a director on the Tata Sons board.
According to the resolutions from the October 17 meeting, trustees are assigned on a long-term and life basis, with the possibility of reevaluation upon reaching 75 years of age. This framework indicates a structured approach to governance within Tata Trusts, essential for maintaining stability and continuity in its leadership.
