China Alleges US Cyberattack on National Time Centre: Rising Tensions Explained
China has accused the United States National Security Agency (NSA) of conducting cyberattacks on its National Time Service Centre. This assertion follows a comprehensive investigation, during which Chinese officials claimed that any resultant damage to the facilities could have potentially disrupted critical network communications, financial systems, and the power supply.
The Ministry of State Security in China alleged that the NSA exploited weaknesses in the messaging systems of a foreign mobile phone brand to receive sensitive information from the devices used by the staff of the National Time Service Centre in 2022. However, details regarding the specific brand were not disclosed.
Additionally, the agency purportedly employed 42 different types of “special cyberattack weapons” to target various internal network systems of the time centre. Furthermore, it allegedly attempted to breach a vital timing system between the years 2023 and 2024.
