NTPC Seeks to Renew Bangladesh Power Deal: Insights from Tripura’s Palatana
Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd (NVVN) has initiated the renewal process for its power supply agreement with Bangladesh, sourced from the Palatana plant in Tripura, officials confirmed on October 18. The existing contract between Tripura State Electricity Corporation Ltd (TSECL) and the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB), which allows for the supply of 100 MW of power, is set to expire in March 2026.
In a meeting held in New Delhi on Thursday, NVVN officials discussed the renewal with TSECL Managing Director Debasish Bose. “We are ready to renew the agreement with BPDB,” Bose told PTI, emphasizing that TSECL currently delivers an average of 85 MW to Bangladesh each day, with an increase to 100 MW anticipated starting in November.
Bose indicated that the next step involves NVVN engaging discussions with authorities in Bangladesh. “If they agree, we will continue to supply power to the neighboring country,” he added. When asked about potential power exports to Nepal, Bose remarked that supplying power to Bangladesh is presently more feasible, highlighting a continued focus on extending the existing agreement.
The Palatana plant, a vital power station in Tripura, plays a significant role in enhancing regional energy cooperation, thus bolstering India’s electricity exports to neighboring nations.
