Controversy Erupts Over Member Selection Process at Guwahati Press Club!
The Guwahati Press Club has become embroiled in controversy over its membership selection process after claims surfaced about the removal of several working journalists from the member list. These allegations raise questions about the transparency and fairness of the club’s procedures.
Numerous journalists, speaking anonymously, have claimed that a segment of reporters affiliated with digital news media was removed from the prestigious organization without any valid reasons being disclosed.
Kokil Saikia, a journalist from Northeast Now, expressed his concerns, stating, “I have been working in the media for the past five years. I became a member of the Guwahati Press Club three years ago. However, my application for membership renewal was rejected.”
Saikia highlighted that this means he and others who were removed will not be able to vote in the upcoming Press Club elections.
Another accusation involves the removal of the names of several senior journalists from the list without explanation. Subsequently, some names were reinstated after objections were raised by other journalists, casting doubt on the initial decision-making process.
Moreover, some claims have been made that journalists with very limited experience in certain media groups were granted membership, while another journalist pointed out that an individual with no direct ties to a prominent news organization in Guwahati was also awarded membership. This has further prompted questions regarding the criteria and transparency of the membership selection process.
