Ayodhya is set to host the world’s first Ramayana-themed wax museum, which will open during the Deepotsav celebrations in 2025, as announced by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Constructed at a cost of approximately ₹7.5 crore, the museum will feature around 50 lifelike statues of prominent characters from the epic, including Ram, Sita, Lakshman, Hanuman, and Ravana. The museum spans 10,000 square feet and is situated on the Parikrama Path near the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir, aimed at enhancing religious tourism in the historic city.
The project, funded significantly by the state, reflects a commitment to showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Ramayana. Once inaugurated, it promises an immersive experience for visitors, allowing them to explore the narrative through finely crafted wax sculptures. Each statue has been intricately designed to capture the essence of its character, with careful attention given to attire, expressions, and lighting.
The Sunil Wax Museum, a Kerala-based firm known for its celebrity wax figures, is responsible for executing this ambitious project, which draws inspiration from traditional South Indian architectural styles. The museum layout will guide visitors chronologically through the story of the Ramayana, starting with scenes from Lord Ram’s childhood and continuing through to significant events like Sita’s swayamvar.
The experience will be enhanced by 3D light effects and immersive soundscapes. Guests will enter a sensory environment filled with fragrances reminiscent of the Treta Yuga and the continuous sound of the ‘Ram Tarak Mantra’ and devotional songs.
The museum is strategically located along the Chaudah Kosi Parikrama route and plans to charge an entry fee of ₹100 per person. To ensure a comfortable visiting experience, capacity will be limited to 100 visitors at a time. Security will be a priority, with CCTV surveillance, fire safety measures, and emergency exits in place. The interiors will be air-conditioned to maintain a pleasant climate.
In addition to the museum, the surrounding area will cater to families and tourists, featuring a designated parking space, snack zones, entertainment options, and a food court offering a variety of cuisines from South and North India.
Ayodhya Municipal Commissioner Jayendra Kumar has reported that construction is progressing swiftly to meet the deadline for the Deepotsav festival, while Divisional Commissioner Rajesh Kumar emphasized that the museum will significantly contribute to the city’s cultural landscape. The museum will operate in partnership with the Ayodhya Municipal Corporation, with a portion of the revenue benefiting local civic initiatives.
The Deepotsav celebrations this year are set to take place from October 28 to 31, featuring a grand diya-lighting ceremony on October 30. This annual event draws millions of visitors, showcasing a spectacular display of lamps that has earned Ayodhya both national and international acclaim.
