The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) custody of Shekharjyoti Mahanta and Amritprabha Mahanta, arrested in connection with the investigation into the death of famed singer Zubeen Garg, ends today, October 16. The CID plans to present both accused before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court on Friday, October 17, as their remand period concludes. Reports indicate that the CID has raised concerns regarding a new development in Baksa that has added new dimensions to the inquiry. Concurrently, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) is pursuing a separate line of inquiry, questioning several non-resident Assamese individuals who may possess crucial information about the case. It is anticipated that the SIT will record some of these statements before the court today to bolster the evidentiary framework.
Earlier this week, heightened security measures were implemented at the CJM Court in Guwahati, coinciding with the end of CID custody for Shyamkanu Mahanta and Siddharth Sharma. Both were produced in court and, alongside three others, were remanded to 14-day judicial custody.
Tensions erupted outside Baksa district jail when protests broke out, with demonstrators demanding justice for Zubeen Garg. Reports suggest that police resorted to lathi charges and fired shots to disperse the crowd. Although order has been restored, tensions remain high in the area.
