Urgent: Assam Police Thwart Rhino Poaching, Three Apprehended in Action
A coordinated operation by the police from Biswanath, Majuli, and Lakhimpur successfully thwarted a rhino poaching attempt, as reported by authorities. The operation involved senior officers, including the Assistant Superintendent of Police (Crime) from Biswanath, the Assistant Superintendent of Police (HQ) from Majuli, the Deputy Superintendent of Police (HQ) from Majuli, and the in-charge of the Central District Sub-Police (CDSP) from Gohpur, along with personnel from Gohpur and Narayanpur police stations.
In connection with this incident, three suspects were arrested. They are Muhikanta Pegu from Dhenudhara in Gohpur, Manuj Pathari, 38, from Mishamora in Majuli, and Kiran Pegu, 41, from Ukhal Chuk, also in Majuli. Following information obtained from the detained individuals, police recovered a .303 rifle and nine 70 mm 12-bore cartridges during a search at the residence of Debajit Pegu, who is currently at large, in New Dandi, Gohpur.
A case has been filed, and the investigation is still ongoing under the supervision of the ASP (Crime) from Biswanath. Authorities have reiterated their dedication to safeguarding wildlife and combatting poaching in the region, signaling a strong commitment to environmental protection and law enforcement.
