Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav’s Facebook account was reinstated on Saturday, following a suspension that he contended was unjustified. Yadav highlighted that his posts related to the deaths of a journalist and a woman in Ballia had been incorrectly flagged under allegations of “adult sexual exploitation and violence.” He asserted that these posts were aimed at raising awareness about the pressures faced by journalists under the current BJP government.
“I was informed that the objection was based on adult content. Upon reviewing the report, I found that the flagged posts discussed the murder of a journalist and a woman in Ballia,” Yadav explained. He further criticized the BJP’s tactics for suppressing journalistic freedom, stating, “In the post, I questioned the circumstances surrounding the death of a journalist, lamenting the pressure and FIRs against journalists. What was inappropriate about that?” He maintained that such actions would not dissuade him from continuing his advocacy. “We will carry on our efforts on the ground and educate the public-this is where the true battle lies,” he affirmed.
After regaining access to his account, which boasts over 8.5 million followers, Yadav shared a tribute to Jayaprakash Narayan on his birth anniversary, emphasizing the need for societal reform and empowerment of the oppressed.
The suspension of Yadav’s account took place around 6 PM on Friday, although the exact reasons for the action were initially unclear. Following the incident, leaders from the Samajwadi Party accused the BJP of attempting to silence dissenting voices. SP leader Fakhrul Hasan Chaand denounced the move as “an attack on democracy,” alleging that the BJP government has imposed “an undeclared emergency” to inhibit opposition expression.
In response to the controversy, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the government had no involvement in the suspension, asserting that it was a decision taken by Facebook based on its policies. “There was an abusive post on their account; the government has no role in this,” he remarked.
This incident highlights ongoing tensions between political figures and social media platforms, particularly regarding censorship and the freedom of expression. Yadav’s reinstatement underscores the importance of safeguarding digital spaces for political discourse, especially in a climate where content moderation policies can significantly impact public dialogue.
