Empowering Women Entrepreneurs: Rs 14.2 Cr Seed Fund Launched in Guwahati
Dibrugarh: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma distributed seed funding of Rs 10,000 each to 14,205 women entrepreneurs in Dibrugarh under the Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan (MMUA) on Friday. The distribution ceremony took place at Khanikar Playground, attracting participants from both rural and urban areas of the district. Among the beneficiaries, 7,777 women came from rural regions while 6,248 were from urban localities.
The MMUA scheme is one of Assam’s most ambitious initiatives aimed at empowering women entrepreneurs. The state government has committed over Rs 3,000 crore in seed capital to support more than 3 million women entrepreneurs statewide. The program encompasses various sectors such as agriculture, handloom, handicrafts, and livestock rearing, offering women financial resources to start and expand their businesses.
“This seed fund is not just financial assistance; it is an investment in the capabilities and dreams of our women entrepreneurs. We believe that when women are economically empowered, families and communities thrive,” stated Himanta during the ceremony. The scheme follows a performance-based model, allowing beneficiaries who effectively utilize the initial Rs 10,000 seed fund to qualify for further financial support in subsequent phases. This structured approach aims to ensure sustainable business growth while upholding accountability in fund usage.
“We aim to cultivate successful women entrepreneurs. Those who judiciously use this seed capital and demonstrate business growth will receive further government support in a phased manner,” added the Chief Minister. The MMUA scheme fits into the Assam government’s broader strategy to enhance women’s participation in the economy and promote sustainable livelihood opportunities. By focusing on traditional industries like handloom and handicrafts, as well as agriculture and livestock, the program hopes to uphold cultural heritage while fostering economic progress.
With the recent distribution in Dibrugarh, the state government is advancing its district-wise rollout of the scheme, moving closer to its goal of supporting 3 million women entrepreneurs throughout Assam.
