Amur Falcons Arrive Early in Manipur and Nagaland: Witness Their Epic Migration!
The first flocks of Amur falcons, recognized as the world’s longest-traveling migratory birds, have arrived earlier than usual in Manipur’s Tamenglong district and parts of Nagaland. This marks the beginning of their impressive 20,000-kilometer journey from Siberia, China, and Russia to southern Africa. Officials reported sightings of the migratory birds, locally referred to as Akhuaipuina or Tamuanpui, on Tuesday at Guangram Village, a significant roosting site in Manipur.
Their arrival coincides with the ongoing Wildlife Week celebrations organized by the state government, which will conclude on October 8, 2025. According to the Manipur Forest Department, this year’s arrival is ahead of schedule; for instance, last year, the birds reached Tamenglong on October 23, 2024.
In a significant conservation achievement last November, two Amur falcons-Chiuluan2 and Guangram-were fitted with satellite transmitters in a project led by the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) to monitor their migratory pathways. This tagging initiative, overseen by Dr. Suresh Kumar, seeks to collect real-time data to help protect this globally threatened species.
Officials confirmed that Chiuluan2, a male falcon tagged in Tamenglong, successfully completed its migration and returned to its breeding grounds in Amur, Russia, on May 28, 2025. Since 2015, the Manipur government, in partnership with NGOs, village councils, and youth clubs, has been actively involved in extensive conservation efforts to safeguard the Amur falcons.
