Indian Coast Guard Unveils Ship Akshar: A New Era in Maritime Defense
The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has officially commissioned Ship Akshar, the second of eight Adamya-class Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs), at Karaikal, Puducherry. This 51-meter vessel is a significant addition to India’s naval capabilities, featuring over 60 percent indigenous content in its construction. This initiative aligns with the Government’s ‘Make in India’ campaign, aimed at boosting local manufacturing and maritime prowess. Ship Akshar has a displacement of approximately 320 tons and is powered by two 3000-kilowatt diesel engines, allowing it to reach a top speed of 27 knots.
Equipped with advanced technology, the vessel includes an Integrated Bridge System (IBS), Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS), and an Automated Power Management System (APMS). These systems enhance its operational efficiency and automation capabilities. Ship Akshar will operate out of Karaikal, under the supervision of the Commander, Coast Guard Region (East). Its primary functions will include maritime zone surveillance and other essential duties.
The commissioning ceremony was presided over by Dipti Mohil Chawla, Additional Secretary of the Indian Defence Accounts Service, alongside Additional Director General Donny Michael, Commander of the Coast Guard Eastern Seaboard, and various senior officials from both the central and state governments. The launch of this vessel not only reinforces India’s commitment to securing its maritime interests but also demonstrates the nation’s growing self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
