MLA Offers Urgent Support as Over 90 Homes Devastated by Fire
Jorhat, Oct 3: In what has been described as an “unfortunate incident,” more than 90 homes were destroyed in an attack on Tengatol, a minority-dominated village situated along the Assam-Nagaland border, late Thursday night, according to Sarupathar MLA Biswajit Phukan.
Phukan stated that both Assam Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), in collaboration with Nagaland Police, managed to reach the site despite challenging conditions. He confirmed that the two state governments are working together to identify those responsible for the attack and to restore normalcy in the region. “We hope that peace and stability prevail here, and we will ensure that the CRPF oversees security to prevent any aggressive acts from miscreants in either Assam or Nagaland. Arrangements are being made for those who have lost their homes,” he remarked.
However, villagers claim that the incident followed numerous warnings. Village headman Rahmat Ali described the horrendous night: “They came around 11:30 p.m. while everyone was asleep. In just over an hour and a half, they destroyed everything-documents, certificates, vehicles, and money. Only one or two houses are left standing. Since the eviction a month ago, we had been receiving threats. We informed the administration and CRPF, but our fears were dismissed as rumors.”
Villagers reported that many sought refuge in rivers and paddy fields to escape, while insurgents obstructed security personnel from accessing the area immediately.
Phukan later confirmed that a meeting took place in the New Land district involving officials from both Assam and Nagaland, during which they agreed to enhance preventative measures and maintain strict vigilance. As a result, police and CRPF forces have been deployed in Tengatol, and senior officials have visited the site.
This incident highlights the fragile peace along the Assam-Nagaland border, where ongoing disputes over land and identity have historically sparked violence.
