Gaurav Gogoi Calls for Urgent Probe Under PM Modi’s Supervision
Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi has reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting his intervention in the investigation into the tragic death of acclaimed singer Zubeen Garg. In a letter dated Tuesday, Gogoi emphasized the need for an urgent, transparent, and impartial investigation, ideally overseen by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), to ensure justice.
Gogoi specifically urged that the Special Investigation Team (SIT), formed by the Assam Police to look into Garg’s death, should operate under PMO supervision. He also called for the protection of civil society members, peaceful protesters, and Garg’s family, who have been vocal in their demand for justice.
The Congress MP from Jorhat expressed concerns about the state government’s handling of the matter. He claimed that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has exhibited undue leniency towards the main suspects, event organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta and manager Sidhartha Sharma, potentially jeopardizing the investigation.
“This leniency, compounded with the extended freedom given to the accused, threatens the integrity of the investigation,” Gogoi stated. He highlighted that despite public outcry and numerous complaints throughout Assam, the government has failed to take decisive action.
Additionally, he criticized the Chief Minister for comparing peaceful protests in Assam to recent unrest in Nepal, describing the comment as “unwarranted” and dismissive of public sentiment. Instead of focusing on the actual suspects, Gogoi alleged that Assam Police have targeted several peaceful demonstrators, detaining some under the National Security Act (NSA), which he characterized as intimidation for those seeking justice.
Gogoi further noted that Zubeen Garg was more than just a legendary artist; he was a unifying figure who resonated with generations across Assam and the Northeast. His untimely death has caused widespread grieving and raised serious concerns about the circumstances surrounding it. Despite the formation of the SIT, Gogoi pointed out that the Chief Minister has only asked the accused to appear before the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) by October 6, rather than initiating immediate legal actions.
He illuminated potential conflicts of interest, mentioning that the North East India Festival (NEIF), which Zubeen attended shortly before his death, was significantly funded by the Ministry of DoNER and the Union Ministry of Tourism while also involving several Union ministers. He disclosed that Sidhartha Sharma had previously served as co-in-charge of the cultural wing of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the BJP’s youth wing.
Zubeen Garg tragically passed away on September 19 while swimming in Singapore, where he was participating in the NEIF. Following his death, the Assam government established a ten-member SIT led by Special DGP M. P. Gupta to investigate the incident. Gogoi concluded his letter with a heartfelt plea for the Prime Minister’s swift intervention to restore public confidence and deliver justice for Zubeen Garg’s mourning family and fans nationwide.
