Exciting Update: Airtel, BSNL, Vi, and Jio Users Can Ditch Physical SIMs!
BSNL has officially launched its eSIM service in India, joining Airtel, Jio, and Vodafone Idea in this technological advancement. Currently, the eSIM feature is available in selected regions. An eSIM functions similarly to a physical SIM card but exists digitally within your device. This innovation is compatible with many high-end smartphones, including the iPhone, Google Pixel, and Samsung Galaxy S series.
Switching to an eSIM offers several benefits. You won’t need to frequently remove it, and there’s no risk of physical damage, unlike traditional SIM cards. However, it’s crucial to note that if you accidentally delete the eSIM from your device, your network connection will be immediately cut off.
The process to activate an eSIM varies slightly among telecommunication companies. Jio users can request their eSIM through the MyJio app or by visiting the nearest Jio store. Airtel and Vodafone Idea customers can apply via their respective official applications or by sending an SMS with the keyword “eSIM” to the designated numbers 121 or 199, depending on their network. BSNL users need to visit a customer service center in person to apply, completing the necessary KYC process, which requires an Aadhaar card.
Once you’ve submitted your request, follow these steps for activation: a QR code for the eSIM will be sent to your registered email address. Then, navigate to Settings – Mobile Networks/Cellular/SIM Services on your device. Select the option to “Add eSIM” or “Download eSIM,” and scan the QR code received in the email. After that, you will receive a verification call to finalize the process, which can take up to four hours.
After the eSIM activation, your physical SIM will automatically disconnect, allowing you to use only the eSIM for all services. As regulated by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), you’ll be unable to send or receive SMS for the first 24 hours following activation to prevent SIM swap fraud.
This development is significant for Airtel, BSNL, Vodafone Idea, and Jio users, as it eliminates the necessity of a physical SIM card. The eSIM is now live in select areas, offering the same functionality as traditional SIM cards but with added convenience and reliability.
