Engaging Youth in Birdwatching: Aaranyak’s Exciting Initiative in Kaziranga
In an effort to foster environmental awareness and conservation values among youth, Aaranyak, a prominent biodiversity conservation organization, has launched a guided birdwatching program for individuals aged 10 to 19. This initiative spans four villages in the Kaziranga–Karbi Anglong Landscape: Chandrasing Rongpi, Phumen Engti, Englepothar, and Sarbura Singnar.
Launched in January 2025, the program is held every Sunday from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM, accommodating participants’ schedules. To date, eight sessions have successfully engaged 59 young participants. The weekly walks are led by Bhaskor Barukial, with support from Rangsina Phangcho, focusing on cultivating ecological understanding and preparing the next generation of community-based birdwatchers and conservationists.
During these sessions, participants learn the basics of bird identification, concentrating on characteristics like shape, size, and color, along with proper field equipment usage, such as binoculars. They are also assigned weekly tasks to document bird sightings on datasheets, which are reviewed during Sunday meetings. This hands-on, interactive approach has effectively sparked curiosity and improved observational skills among the youth.
Through this initiative, Aaranyak reinforces its commitment to biodiversity conservation, ecosystem protection, and support for indigenous communities in the Kaziranga-Karbi Anglong and Manas Landscapes. The organization is dedicated to promoting sustainable livelihoods, education, and awareness as essential elements of its mission, as stated in a press release.
