Hope on the Horizon: Residents in Ambattur Zone Celebrate Relief from Sewage Woes as Metrowater Pipeline Project Nears Completion!
Residents of Korattur and Padi in the Ambattur zone are set to experience relief from persistent sewage issues, especially during the monsoon season. This follows Metrowater’s progress in replacing an aging 11.25-km sewer main pipeline that connects Padi to the Kodungaiyur Sewage Treatment Plant (STP). The ₹106.42 crore project aims to alleviate the frequent complaints of sewage overflow that plague these localities during heavy rain.
Metrowater officials have reported that the existing 900-mm diameter pipeline has been prone to leaks due to its age. To mitigate problems, sewage pumping occurs on a rotational basis to minimize bursts, although this strategy has not fully prevented the overflow that residents endure after rainfall. J. Gopalakrishnan, president of the Federation of Korattur Residents’ Welfare Associations, highlighted specific neighborhoods like Central Avenue and 18th Street in the TNHB Colony, which often suffer from rainwater mixed with sewage.
Once the pipeline replacement is finished, expected by mid-October, officials project a reduction in complaints by at least 50% for residents of Korattur and Padi. The enhancements to the Korattur sewage pumping station, which recently received an odour-control upgrade, will significantly improve local sewage management.
Currently, nearly 98% of the work to replace the old pipeline with a more robust 1,000-mm diameter cast iron pipeline has been completed. This new pipeline, designed to handle up to 30.5 million liters of sewage daily, will streamline sewage collection from 18 pumping stations. The pipeline route stretches along the Inner Ring Road, through the Madhavaram roundabout, and along GNT Road, ultimately reaching the STP.
The project faced several challenges, including work near railway lines, culverts, and busy arterial roads, which contributed to delays in its four-year timeline. As completion approaches, residents hope to see a marked improvement in the local sewage infrastructure and a significant decline in the flooding issues that have long affected the area.
With ongoing efforts to enhance sewage management in Chennai, the completion of this project signals a crucial step toward ensuring a cleaner, more efficient drainage system for local communities, particularly during inclement weather. The focus on upgrading infrastructure not only addresses immediate concerns but also contributes to long-term sustainability and public health.
