Deputy Chief Minister Shiawbhalang Dhar announced on September 23 that the Meghalaya government will review transport policies from Sikkim, Karnataka, and Maharashtra as part of its strategy to address the ongoing dispute regarding vehicles from other states transporting tourists into Meghalaya. As the head of the Transport portfolio, Dhar stated that officials from the Transport Department, working together with Chief Secretary Donald Phillips Wahlang, will consult their counterparts in these neighboring states to develop a suitable policy. He emphasized the need for careful consideration before a final decision is made.
After a meeting with the All Khasi Meghalaya Tourist Taxi Association (AKMTTA), Dhar described the talks as productive, highlighting a common agreement on the necessity for ongoing dialogue. He urged all stakeholders to avoid protests while discussions are underway, saying, “This matter requires time and patience. The government and stakeholders are moving forward together.”
The AKMTTA had previously initiated a protest demanding a ban on Assam-registered vehicles transporting tourists within Meghalaya. This agitation was put on hold after the government’s commitment to reassess the situation. Recently, tensions at Jorabat, the main entry point to the state, between taxi drivers from Assam and Meghalaya have disrupted tourist traffic to Shillong and other regional destinations.
Tourism is a crucial economic driver in Meghalaya, providing essential income for local taxi operators, homestay owners, and guides. Local taxi associations argue that unrestricted access for vehicles from outside states could threaten their livelihoods.
