Controversy Erupts in Tripura Assembly Over Royal Family and Modi’s Event
A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated development projects at the Mata Tripurasundari Temple Complex, the Congress party and the ruling alliance partner, the Tipra Motha Party, raised significant allegations on Tuesday, September 23. They accused the state government of not inviting the opposition or any members of the royal family to the ceremony.
During the second day of the Tripura Legislative Assembly, Tipra Motha Party MLA Pathan Lal Jamatia emphasized the importance of the event, describing Monday as a historic day when PM Modi unveiled the development works at the Tripura Sundari Temple. Jamatia highlighted the royal family’s historical significance, noting that priests in several temples, including the Tripura Sundari Temple, perform rituals on behalf of Maharaja Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma. He expressed concern that the Maharaja was not invited to the inauguration, asking, “Why was this overlooked?”
His colleague, MLA Biswajit Kalai, shared similar sentiments, pointing out that the absence of representatives from the Manikya dynasty was hurtful to the Tiprasa community. MLA Ranjit Debbarma remarked on the oddity of no royal family members being present at such an important event, calling it a “black chapter in the state” during his comments about the pride associated with MBB Airport.
In response to these allegations, Tripura Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury clarified that the guest list had been confirmed by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). He mentioned that East Tripura MP Kriti Devi Debbarma, the elder sister of Pradyot, was included in the list sent to the PMO for approval. However, MP Kriti was unable to attend due to health reasons. Chowdhury defended the choices made, saying that many leaders from the Tipra Motha Party were present and urged the opposition not to create controversy by taking this personally.
Tipra Motha Party MLA and Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma added that during discussions, he had requested that a member of the royal family be invited to the event. He explained that the PMO had directed that the program remain small in scale, leading to the decision to invite Kriti Devi Debbarma to represent the royal family.
Congress MLA Birajit Sinha also voiced concerns, questioning why no opposition figures were invited, asking, “Is this event and the temple only for the BJP?”
To conclude the discussion, Tripura Power and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath stated that the arrangements were initially made at the state level before being sent to the PMO. “Ultimately, the final decisions were made by the PMO,” he said, emphasizing that the government did not intend to hurt anyone’s feelings and acknowledging the need for more caution moving forward if sentiments had been hurt.
