The mortal remains of beloved Assamese singer Zubeen Garg began their final journey home on Sunday morning. His body arrived at his residence in Kahilipara from Guwahati airport, prompting an outpouring of grief from thousands of mourners who lined the streets.
The convoy moved slowly through a sea of fans from all walks of life, who showered flowers on the flower-decked ambulance carrying the iconic singer’s coffin. The casket, adorned with a traditional Assamese ‘gamosa’, marigolds, and jasmine, was first received at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport after arriving on a flight from Delhi at 7 am.
Zubeen’s wife, Garima Saikia Garg, was visibly emotional upon seeing the casket. She placed a floral tribute and a gamosa before embracing it. Senior officials, including Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, were present to honor the singer’s return. Sarma later joined the convoy, which included Zubeen’s favorite open jeep and his team of musicians, as they made the 25-kilometer journey to Kahilipara.
As the procession continued, fans sang Zubeen’s songs and shouted “Jai Zubeen da,” while holding cut-outs and gamosas inscribed with “Z G (Zubeen Garg) Forever.” Many raised their mobile phones to capture the poignant moment of the singer’s final journey, a man who had mesmerized generations with over 38,000 songs in 40 languages and dialects.
The singer’s remains will stay at his Kahilipara residence for about one-and-a-half hours, allowing family members, including his 85-year-old ailing father, to pay their last respects. The body will then be taken to the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex, where the public can pay homage from 9 am to 7 pm.
Details regarding the last rites are still being finalized. The Assam Cabinet is scheduled to meet Sunday evening to decide on the cremation venue. Chief Minister Sarma noted that the casket could not fit on a chartered flight; instead, it was flown from Delhi on a regular flight that departed New Delhi at 4:30 am after arriving from Singapore, where Zubeen tragically passed away while swimming without a life jacket.
