Unlocking a Greener Future: Strategic Insights from the NE Bamboo Conclave
GUWAHATI, Sept. 18: The ‘Northeast Bamboo Conclave 2025’ held in Guwahati on Thursday gathered policymakers, industry leaders, entrepreneurs, and innovators from India and beyond to discuss and shape the future of the bamboo sector in the Northeast. Organized by the North East Cane and Bamboo Development Council (NECBDC) with support from the North Eastern Council (NEC), the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER), and the National Bamboo Mission (NBM), the event represented a significant advance in promoting investments, corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, and the development of a bio-economy centered around sustainable bamboo practices.
In line with World Bamboo Day 2025, the conclave emphasized the Northeast’s essential role in India’s bamboo strategy, with discussions setting the stage for alignment on policies, industry partnerships, and initiatives designed for future readiness. Participants shared a collective vision for a bamboo economy that fosters environmental sustainability, job creation, and regional development, contributing to the realization of Viksit Bharat through Viksit Bamboo.
M.C. Omi Ningshen, managing director of NECBDC, addressed the conclave, emphasizing that the event served not only as a discussion platform but also a movement to harness the considerable potential that bamboo offers for green growth and livelihood opportunities in Northeast India. “As we align with the National Bamboo Mission, our focus is on fostering partnerships, driving investments, and promoting innovations that will make bamboo a cornerstone of India’s bio-economy,” Ningshen stated.
The inaugural session set a collaborative and innovative tone, featuring presentations that illustrated India’s bamboo value chain, the opportunities presented by the National Bamboo Mission, and the vast global market potential for bamboo-based products. Success stories from the Northeast showcased innovative entrepreneurial ventures as examples of resilience and sustainable growth.
A notable highlight of the day was the signing and exchange of memorandums of understanding (MoUs), signaling renewed commitments to enhance the bamboo ecosystem. Agreements were signed with Numaligarh Refinery and SELCO Foundation to support CSR-driven development initiatives. Additional MoUs were established with IIT Guwahati and NID, Ahmedabad, further solidifying partnerships aimed at advancing the bamboo industry in the region.
