Frustration Grows as Kozhikode Clings to Outdated Traffic Signals: Urgent Real-time Management Proposals Stuck in Limbo!
Several innovative proposals aimed at enhancing Kozhikode’s traffic signalling system, submitted by senior police officers, are languishing without funding or serious discussion. These plans, which leverage AI for real-time traffic management and dynamic signal control, offer a promising solution to the gridlock that plagues the city’s major thoroughfares. However, experts have yet to evaluate the operational models of these proposals through scientific study.
A retired police officer, who participated in the development of these traffic management solutions, expressed concern about the outdated signalling systems at key junctions. “Many major junctions in the city still run on systems that can’t sync with contemporary traffic patterns, leading to frequent snarls and significant delays during peak hours,” he said. He noted that traffic police often find themselves manually directing vehicles, especially under adverse weather conditions, due to malfunctioning signals.
Some of the most affected areas include Mavoor Road, Eranhipalam, Arayidathupalam, Palayam, Pottammal, and Medical College. In stark contrast, the Kozhikode bypass-with its advanced signalling systems-enjoys smooth traffic flow, accentuating the limitations of the city center’s outdated network.
Preliminary estimates from experts at the Kerala State Electronics Development Corporation (Keltron) indicate that the implementation of AI-driven signalling systems would cost approximately ₹5 lakh per junction. These systems are designed to monitor vehicle counts in real-time and automatically adjust signal timings based on traffic volume. Experts assert that this strategy could significantly reduce waiting times, alleviate bottlenecks, and enhance overall traffic efficiency.
The Road Accident Action Forum, a state-level organization committed to reducing road fatalities, has highlighted the potential of the underutilized Road Safety Fund. This fund could be redirected towards advanced traffic management initiatives, maximizing its impact.
A senior officer within Kozhikode’s traffic department noted that Keltron has submitted a comprehensive proposal for a statewide traffic management system. This system would autonomously register vehicles’ numbers and types at intersections, thereby optimizing signal patterns to ensure smoother traffic flow. “The proposal also includes plans for installing anti-glare filters on AI-enabled cameras, which would provide clearer visuals of vehicles and drivers-crucial for enforcing traffic rules,” he added. The collected data could enhance both enforcement efforts and long-term traffic planning.
Additionally, a senior official from the Revenue department, previously linked to projects under the Kerala Road Safety Council, emphasized the urgency of conducting a pilot study to assess the feasibility of these proposals. He advocated for select junctions in the city to be transformed into model intersections through public-private partnerships, allowing for a practical demonstration of potential benefits.
As Kozhikode continues to grapple with traffic challenges, the integration of AI and modern technology into its signalling systems presents a promising pathway forward. With the right investment and commitment, the city’s traffic management could evolve into a more responsive and efficient system, ultimately improving the experience for all road users.
