Disaster Strikes Biswanath: Lifeline Bridge Collapses, 500 Families in Crisis
Incessant rainfall along the Assam-Arunachal border has caused catastrophic flooding in Biswanath district, stranding hundreds of families and inflicting extensive damage to homes, crops, and infrastructure. The situation deteriorated on Monday, affecting numerous villages under the Selaikhati gaon panchayat, including Mahajuli Pathar, Mahajuli Basti, Tengabasti, Dalongguri, and Selaikhati Borogao. Residents are currently facing severe distress, lacking adequate shelter and food.
The flooding was exacerbated by the collapse of a crucial wooden bridge that connected Selaikhati and Phukonsang. This bridge served as an essential lifeline for villagers and students traveling to colleges in Biswanath and Chatiya, and its destruction has left many stranded. One local resident lamented, “Six villages are submerged and people have no place to cook; their homes are under water. The bridge’s collapse cut us off, leaving many students and villagers stranded. We appeal to the administration and our MLA to urgently restore connectivity and provide relief.”
Another villager expressed frustration over the absence of immediate governmental response. “The bridge is gone; houses and grain stores have been swept away. We urge the Chief Minister and the district administration to extend support without delay. Local efforts have kept people safe so far, but the situation needs urgent attention,” he noted.
Madhuryya Parashar, the Circle Officer of Biswanath, visited the affected areas with officials and reported that more than 500 families have been impacted. “We have collected the data and will soon release relief materials. If water levels do not recede, relief camps will be set up by tonight,” he assured the press.
Additionally, floodwaters from the rising Pabhoi Ghagora River have submerged roads in Pabhoi and Mijika, causing significant disruption to transportation. Many localities within Biswanath municipality have also experienced waterlogging, with residents attributing this to inadequate drainage systems.
As the Pabhoi Ghagora and Burhi Gaang rivers continue to rise, concerns persist that the crisis could worsen in the coming days.
