Garo Hills Groups Reject NPYF’s Apology Demand: What’s Next?
Several groups from Garo Hills, who attended a meeting with Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to address the ongoing GHADC crisis and the Tura Medical College, have dismissed the demand for an apology from a medical student made by the NPYF. The NPYF had claimed the student acted rudely and exhibited a lack of knowledge, maturity, and etiquette.
On Friday, a coalition of groups including ADE, AYWO, FAF, FKJGP, and GSU issued a statement defending the student and declaring there was no need for an apology. The joint statement emphasized that the civil society organizations observed the entire meeting, which lasted between five to six hours, and found no evidence that the student lacked knowledge or decorum. They noted that the student maintained composure and patience, even when his questions went unanswered by the authorities.
The groups acknowledged that there was a single moment when some might have interpreted the student’s tone and gestures as arrogance or defiance. However, they argued that context is essential to understanding his responses. The incident occurred nearly three hours into the meeting when the Chief Minister appeared dismissive of their suggestions, contributing to the student’s assertiveness in expressing his views.
Furthermore, the coalition rejected the NPYF’s assertion that only those with knowledge and etiquette deserve a conversation with the Chief Minister. They also dismissed the implication that the student was influenced by external interests.
In response to the NPYF’s insistence that the student apologize to Chief Minister Sangma, as well as to the attending senior citizens and civil society representatives, the joint statement maintained that the student did not behave in a manner warranting such an apology. Instead, they commended his commitment, courage, and sense of responsibility in participating in the meeting, despite the resources he dedicated to attending.
