Unfolding the Intense Battle: 56 Candidates Compete in Chirang’s 7 Constituencies

Chirang is gearing up for a significant electoral contest as 56 candidates prepare to vie for seats in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections on September 22. This announcement comes following the withdrawal of six nominations, which reshapes the competitive landscape.

In the 17th Subaijhar constituency, independent candidates Rosoraj Basumatary and Guneshwar Goyari, alongside David Basumatary of the National Roadmap Party of India, have stepped back from the race. Similarly, candidates from the 19th Thuribari (Open) constituency, including AGP’s Parthajit Roy and independents Pawan Tarafdar and Sekhar Kumar Bhowmik, have also withdrawn their nominations.

The updated candidate distribution reveals a competitive field: Chirang has 7 candidates, Chirang Duar features 7, including prominent figures Hagrama Mohilary and Khampa Borgoyari, Kajalgaon has 5 contenders, Nichima displays 6 candidates, Subaijhar comprises 6, Manas Serfang includes 6, and Thuribari has a notably high count of 19 candidates.

District Election Officer and Chirang Deputy Commissioner Jatin Bora provided a press briefing on the overall election scenario, while Bijni SDO Arijit Mahajan detailed the specifics for the four constituencies under his jurisdiction.

As the election date approaches, tensions rise. The Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) has intensified its criticism of the ruling United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL). Rinjoy Boro, Youth President of the BPF, accused the ruling party of failing to meet its commitments, asserting that they have not fulfilled promises regarding job creation and development initiatives. He highlighted that farmers and students received inadequate support, claiming that the development witnessed under the current regime remains “zero.”

Boro mentioned a specific unfulfilled pledge to establish a Northeastern Institute of Medical Sciences in Chirang district, shedding light on a broader sentiment among the public who are eager to re-align with Hagrama Mohilary and the BPF.

Paralleling this sentiment, Paniram Brahma, MCLA candidate from Kajalgaon, expressed optimism about the forthcoming elections, stating that the significant turnout in support of their campaign signifies confidence in a decisive victory, predicting a margin of over 4,000 votes.

Official data indicates there are 398,643 eligible voters in the Chirang district. With high-profile candidates and influential political figures in contention, the upcoming BTC elections are set to be a fiercely contested affair.
