Shillong Medical College Celebrates Approval for 50 New MBBS Seats!
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved the allocation of 50 MBBS seats for Shillong Medical College, officially marking the establishment of Meghalaya’s first government-run medical institution. This important development addresses a significant gap in the state’s healthcare education infrastructure, which previously lacked a dedicated state-operated medical college.
The NMC’s Letter of Permission represents the culmination of years of planning and is a major breakthrough for medical education in the northeastern region of India. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma expressed his enthusiasm for this initiative, stating that it is “a historic day for Meghalaya” and a key milestone in the state’s journey towards enhanced medical education.
With the allocation of these 50 seats, the college is set to admit its first batch of students via the established NEET-UG process. Counseling for admissions is scheduled to begin on September 4, with classes expected to commence on September 27, 2025, in alignment with the national medical entrance examination timeline.
This approval is anticipated to greatly benefit local students who have previously sought medical education outside of Meghalaya, often facing significant financial and logistical challenges. The new institution aims to strengthen the healthcare workforce within the state and improve access to quality medical education for its residents.
“A long-cherished dream of a State-run Medical College is now a reality,” remarked Sangma, emphasizing the significance of this achievement for the region’s future and the aspirations of its students.
