Unlocking Secrets of North Sikkim Glaciers: A Groundbreaking Study
A multidisciplinary scientific team has successfully completed an extensive field mission in North Sikkim, running from August 26 to September 1, with a primary focus on assessing glacial lakes and conducting sediment studies in light of recent flood-related incidents in the area. The mission began in Muguthang, and by Day 8, the team had reached South Lhonak, where they held a ceremonial puja at Chimigyader and the lake itself to invoke blessings for the operation. This was reported by the Science and Technology department.
At South Lhonak, which stands at 17,200 feet, the team carried out bathymetric studies, installed pressure probes, and collected sediment samples crucial for ongoing assessments of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs). After completing their work at South Lhonak, personnel from various organizations, including the National Institute of Hydrology and the Geological Survey of India, concluded their objectives and departed.
The remaining team members proceeded to Changsang Lake at 18,100 feet, where they continued mapping bathymetric features and performed a detailed analysis of the lake’s terminal moraine. This analysis is vital for evaluating the stability and potential hazards of glacial lakes.
On September 1, the team arrived in Thangu, where they began preparations for studying YulehKhangse Lake, situated above Lashar Valley, as part of their ongoing glaciological and hydrological mission. This expedition is part of India’s broader initiative to monitor Himalayan glacial systems and improve early warning mechanisms against GLOFs and other climate-related hazards in high-altitude regions, according to the Science and Technology department.
