Mizoram Unveils 10 High-Tech Forensic Vehicles to Combat Crime Effectively
Mizoram’s Home Minister K. Sapdanga inaugurated 10 state-of-the-art Mobile Forensic Vehicles (MFVs) on Monday, September 1, at the Directorate of Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Aizawl. This initiative marks a crucial advancement in enhancing scientific crime investigation in the state.
The Government of India sanctioned the vehicles in August 2025, with a total cost of ₹4.818 crore. Equipped with modern forensic tools and technologies, the MFVs are intended to support the implementation of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023. This legislation requires forensic certification for all cases carrying a punishment of over seven years and took effect nationwide on July 1, 2024.
In a further effort to strengthen Mizoram’s forensic infrastructure, the Centre has allocated ₹6.13 crore to the state for additional support. This funding includes 15 sets of advanced forensic equipment alongside the newly deployed vehicles. Currently, the FSL operates mobile forensic units in Aizawl, Lunglei, and Champhai, with plans for broader expansion and ongoing recruitment of specialized forensic experts.
During the launch, Minister Sapdanga praised India’s growing reputation in forensic science, emphasizing that the sector gained significant momentum after the 2012 Delhi ‘Nirbhaya’ case highlighted the importance of scientific evidence in securing justice. He pointed out that Mizoram’s FSL is a pioneer in adopting paperless casework, fast-tracking examinations, and implementing a case-tracking system.
Mizoram currently has 14 forensic experts, led by Director T. Lalropuia, who assist law enforcement agencies with crime scene analysis, laboratory testing, and providing expert testimony in court, ensuring accuracy and fairness in the criminal justice process.
The introduction of these mobile units is expected to substantially enhance Mizoram’s capacity for immediate scientific investigation, aligning its crime scene management closer to global forensic standards.
