Xi Jinping and PM Modi: A New Era of Cooperation Between Dragons and Elephants
Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the importance of maintaining strong ties between New Delhi and Beijing during a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Tianjin on August 31, 2025. In his opening remarks, Xi urged both nations to “remain friends” and develop good neighbourly relations, suggesting that the “dragon and the elephant can dance together” in mutual success.
Xi highlighted the significance of India and China as key members of the Global South, stating that both nations share the responsibility of enhancing the well-being of their citizens and promoting solidarity among developing countries. He remarked on the transformative changes facing the global landscape, describing the current international situation as fluid and chaotic, and underscored the historical role both nations play in advancing societal progress.
Describing India and China as ancient civilizations and the two most populous countries globally, Xi stated, “It is the right choice for both countries to be friends who have good neighbourly and amicable ties, partners who enable each other’s success.” He urged both governments to strengthen their commitment to multilateralism and work collaboratively towards a multipolar world, advocating for increased democracy in international relations to foster peace and prosperity in Asia and beyond.
As 2025 marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and India, Xi called for a strategic and long-term approach to handling bilateral relations, aiming for sustained and steady development. He reiterated the need for both nations to uphold their historic responsibility in promoting a cooperative global environment.
Earlier in the meeting, PM Modi expressed that India-China cooperation could benefit all of humanity, reaffirming New Delhi’s commitment to fostering bilateral relations grounded in mutual trust, respect, and sensitivity. Modi also congratulated Xi on his recent chairmanship of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
The two leaders last engaged on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, in 2024. Their recent dialogue was facilitated by an agreement on patrolling protocols along the 3,500-km-long Line of Actual Control (LAC), which has effectively alleviated a four-year border standoff.
