Senapati Champions National Sports Day with ‘One Hour on the Playground’ Initiative
Joining the nationwide initiative to promote unity, teamwork, and fitness, the Senapati district celebrated National Sports Day with the campaign ‘Ek Ghanta Khel Ke Maidan Mein Main’ (One Hour on the Playground). Organized by the District Youth Affairs and Sports Office (DYASO) Senapati, Mera Yuva Bharat Senapati, and the District Khelo India Centre (DKIC), the event featured activities in badminton and indigenous wrestling.
Celebrations took place at the Mini Indoor Stadium in Senapati and at the Multipurpose Hall in Rikhumai Taphou village. P. S. John Longkhaye, Youth Officer of DYASO Senapati, addressed attendees and reflected on the legacy of Major Dhyan Chand, renowned as the “Hockey Wizard.” He noted that National Sports Day is observed annually on August 29 to commemorate the birth anniversary of the hockey legend.
Longkhaye emphasized Dhyan Chand’s achievements, having led India to three Olympic gold medals in field hockey in 1928, 1932, and 1936. He encouraged the district’s youth to adopt values such as fitness, teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. Quoting Dhyan Chand, he reminded athletes, “Play not for fame, but for the joy of the sport. Fame will follow when you give your heart.”
As part of the program, W. Paulina Monsang, Deputy Director of Mera Yuva Bharat Senapati, led the athletes in reciting the National Sports Day pledge. The day’s events included indigenous wrestling bouts and exhibition badminton matches, highlighting the importance of fair play and the life lessons sports impart.
The celebrations are set to continue on August 30 with a 5 km fitness run, in which 30 participants from District Youth Centres will join to honor the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand.
