A member of a car theft gang was apprehended following a dramatic chase spanning 100 kilometers from Delhi to Murthal in Haryana, authorities reported on Tuesday. The suspect reportedly tried to run over a policeman during the pursuit, subsequently fleeing on foot and hiding in a nearby field.

The incident initiated on July 29 when officers at Ranjeet Nagar police station received a report about a stolen Toyota Innova parked near the DDA flats in Pandav Nagar. Through technical surveillance and local intelligence, investigators identified the suspect as 42-year-old Amandeep Singh, hailing from Amritsar, Punjab.

On August 11, police received information that Singh had acquired a stolen Fortuner and was traveling toward Punjab. Officers pursued him for nearly 100 kilometers. At the Murthal toll plaza, Singh attempted to hit a policeman with his vehicle, fleeing once again before abandoning the car and seeking refuge in adjacent fields. Following an hour-long search and an ambush by the Anti-Auto Theft Squad (AATS), Singh was captured, according to DCP Nidhin Valsan from Central Delhi.

Singh has been charged under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Section 305(2) for theft in a dwelling, with a fresh case registered under Sections 221 (obstructing public servants), 132 (assault on public servants), and 109(1) (attempted murder) at Murthal police station.

According to police reports, Singh’s gang specialized in targeting luxury cars equipped with electronic security systems. Prior to each theft, members would photograph the hologram on the back of a vehicle, which contained a unique code. This image was sent to a technical expert in Dubai, who decoded the system and provided a new code. Armed with specialized equipment, gang members would break a window to bypass the security system and steal the vehicle.

Singh’s role involved supplying stolen cars and transporting them from Delhi to Punjab. Law enforcement also recovered three additional luxury vehicles from Punjab based on his information.

Authorities describe Singh as a habitual offender, having previously faced charges in nine cases of theft, forgery, and cheating in Delhi.
