Transforming Futures: National Conference on Fly Ash Utilization by Railways Ministry and NTPC
The Ministry of Railways, in collaboration with NTPC, has convened a National Conference on Fly Ash Utilisation and Transportation at the Power Management Institute located in Noida. This major gathering aimed to address the effective management and use of fly ash, a byproduct of coal combustion. In the fiscal year 2024-25, India produced over 340 million tonnes of fly ash, of which an impressive 332.63 million tonnes were utilized. This indicates a significant commitment to waste management and sustainability within the nation.
According to the Ministry, 32 percent of the generated fly ash was employed in the construction of roads and flyovers, while 27 percent found its way into the cement industry. Additionally, 14 percent was utilized in the manufacturing of bricks and tiles. These figures highlight the multifaceted applications of fly ash, showcasing its potential in various construction sectors.
The Ministry also emphasized the dual benefits of fly ash as an environmentally friendly transportation solution and a cost-effective option, complemented by attractive freight concessions. The conference serves as a pivotal platform for fostering partnerships, sharing valuable insights, and creating a strategic roadmap for sustainable fly ash utilization throughout India.
Participants included fly ash producers, users, transporters, and policymakers who engaged in discussions aimed at developing effective strategies for sustainable fly ash management. The collaborative effort underscores the critical role of fly ash in promoting a greener economy while also addressing the pressing issue of waste disposal.
