Guwahati: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Friday that the principal of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) will not be transferred following the tragic death of a four-day-old infant at the facility. He stated that appropriate action will be taken against anyone found guilty in the upcoming inquiry committee report. Sarma acknowledged that negligence on the part of the arrested nurse contributed to the infant’s death, asserting that protests by other nurses in support of their colleague are misguided. “I saw with my own eyes that negligence was there. A child died. The nurses are themselves mothers, and they can understand the pain of losing a child even more than I can,” Sarma expressed in response to questions about the protests.
The three-member probe committee established by the government is expected to submit its findings within one to two days. The infant, who was born at GMCH on August 15, had been admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for infection and jaundice. Tragically, she was found hanging from wires of medical equipment earlier this week.
Regarding the lack of additional arrests in the case, Sarma emphasized, “Arrests should not be the objective. It could provoke the doctors elsewhere, and they could also go on a protest. The inquiry committee will submit its report in two to three days, and then we will decide.” He reiterated that action would be taken against anyone found guilty in the inquiry.
Addressing claims that GMCH is understaffed, he countered, “Whether it is nurses, doctors, or support staff, there are more personnel than required at GMCH.” Sarma firmly stated that the principal will remain in position despite the recent events. He added, “It is a big hospital, and to err is human. If we focus only on the mistakes, the people doing good work will become demoralized. We shouldn’t make this a matter of public debate, or a TRP thing. As chief minister, I have said action will be taken.”
