IPFT Stands Firm on Statehood Demand, Criticizes Left for Weakening Movement
The Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), an ally of the BJP-led government in Tripura, has reiterated its long-standing demand for a separate state, committing to continue its efforts through democratic channels. During a public meeting in Agartala, coinciding with the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) Day, party General Secretary and Cooperation Minister Shukla Charan Noatia emphasized that despite attempts by the previous Left Front government to diminish the organization, the IPFT has regained its strength and unity.
Noatia highlighted the party’s journey, which began in 2009 under the leadership of the late N.C. Debbarma, with a primary demand for full statehood for the autonomous district. This demand, he asserted, remains unchanged today. Reflecting on the challenges faced, Noatia recalled that in 2016, the party was reportedly prevented from holding a public meeting in Agartala and faced opposition from CPIM members. However, he expressed pride that in 2025, they were once again able to gather in Agartala, indicating that the IPFT is back and intent on continuing its struggle through democratic means.
IPFT President Prem Kumar Reang also spoke to reporters, underscoring the importance of TTAADC Day, which has been observed since 2008 to celebrate the constitutional recognition of the council. He noted that on August 23, 1984, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi passed a special law in Parliament to safeguard the interests of communities under the Sixth Schedule, laying the groundwork for the formation of the TTAADC. Reang mentioned that the IPFT plans to intensify its efforts in the coming days by organizing meetings across various districts and subdivisions to bolster its constitutional and political requests. He affirmed that their initiatives will persist in pushing for a separate state with the central government.
