Meghalaya Police have confirmed fresh attempts by rebel outfits to recruit members, raising concerns about a potential resurgence of militancy in the state following years of relative peace. Director General of Police (DGP) Idashisha Nongrang reported, “We have received information about new recruitments, but we don’t yet know the extent, who these individuals are, or which groups they are joining.” She emphasized that the situation is being closely monitored, although details remain unclear at this time.
The issue was also flagged by the Leader of the Opposition, Mukul Sangma, during recent meetings of the State Security Commission. Nongrang noted, “As the Leader of the Opposition, he is obviously aware of matters we are also tracking. He raised concerns about both educated and uneducated youth attempting to join rebel groups to revive militancy.”
Sangma has criticized the government’s lack of action, attributing the growing frustration among educated unemployed youth to this indifference. He warned that inaction in response to these troubling signs could ignite a resurgence of militancy. “If officials claim ignorance, it reflects their failure or habitual denial, but the situation is alarming. Reports suggest many qualified individuals with professional degrees are resorting to rebellion out of frustration and anger,” he stated.
Sangma, who played a significant role in dismantling militancy during his time in office, expressed concern that the current government has not adequately acknowledged the gravity of the situation. When asked if this points to a renewed insurgency, he replied, “Many youth have already joined armed groups and completed their training. This is certainly concerning, yet there is no visible government response to counter it.”
He cautioned that the ongoing “insensitivity with impunity” from those in power bodes poorly for Meghalaya. Without proactive measures to address unemployment, he believes that frustration among youth will inevitably turn to anger-and ultimately rebellion.
