Hope for Homeless: Stray Dogs Return Post-Sterilisation and Immunisation
The Supreme Court has revised its previous directives regarding the capture and relocation of stray dogs in the Delhi-NCR area. In a new ruling, the three-judge bench, led by Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta, and N.V. Anjaria, ordered that stray dogs should be returned to their original territories following sterilization and vaccination, except for those infected with rabies or displaying aggressive behavior.
Justice Nath’s bench emphasized the need for specific feeding areas designated for stray dogs while placing restrictions on public feeding. The court’s scope now extends beyond the Delhi-NCR region, incorporating all Union Territories and state governments to develop a nationwide policy on stray dogs. Furthermore, the Supreme Court suggested taking over similar petitions that are still pending in various High Courts.
The bench upheld its earlier stance that any organization or group preventing the removal of stray dogs would face stringent legal consequences. Previously, a Division Bench had instructed municipal authorities throughout Delhi-NCR to promptly capture stray dogs and move them to shelters.
