Minister Samdup Lepcha, responsible for Social Welfare, Women, Child, Senior Citizens, and Divyangjan, inaugurated the 34th Sikkim State Badminton Championship 2025 today at the Indoor Badminton Hall in Paljor Stadium. This four-day tournament is organized by the Badminton Association of Sikkim (BAS) under the auspices of the Badminton Association of India.
In his address, Minister Lepcha emphasized the importance of sports in enhancing health, instilling discipline, and bolstering immunity. He remarked that simply participating in sports is a significant achievement, while winning or losing is an inherent part of the experience. He encouraged players to compete with discipline, uphold sportsmanship, and adhere to the sport’s code of conduct. Minister Lepcha also urged young athletes to demonstrate commitment as they represent the next generation and to heed the guidance of officials and parents in their sporting endeavors.
Mr. Jacob Khaling, President of BAS, informed the attendees about the tournament structure, which is organized based on the participants’ age groups, and mentioned that the schedule could be extended by a day if necessary. He added that training sessions and coaching camps will be offered to selected state players to enhance their skills for national-level competitions.
The event commenced with a welcome address by Mr. Sukanta Das, General Secretary of the Badminton Association of Sikkim. Additionally, Master Tseten Wangdi Bhutia administered the players’ oath during the ceremony.
Notable attendees included Ms. Tshering Palden Bhutia, Deputy Mayor of Gangtok Municipal Corporation, SDM Gangtok Mr. Mahindra Chettri, President of the Sikkim Olympic Association Mr. Kuber Bhandari, and Ms. Dawa Ongmu Lepcha, Deputy Director of the Sports and Youth Affairs Department, along with officials, dignitaries, and players representing all districts.
