Three women, suspected of being involved in a notorious drug trafficking operation, were arrested on Sunday by the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) of Meghalaya, in collaboration with the East Jaintia Hills District Police. The authorities seized four travel bags containing 80 soap boxes of heroin, weighing approximately 961.33 grams, with an estimated street value of Rs 4 crore.
The operation was carried out following credible intelligence, leading to a naka check at the Umkiang Police Patrol Post under the jurisdiction of Lumshnong Police Station in the early hours of Sunday. East Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police Vikash Kumar stated that these women are believed to be part of a larger organized crime syndicate, specifically an interstate gang that transports drugs from Manipur to Shillong and further across India.
According to SP Kumar, the ANTF received a tip-off around 11 PM on Saturday about three women traveling from Churachandpur, Manipur to Shillong via public transport, allegedly carrying narcotics. Swift action was taken, and officers established a naka at the Umkiang Patrol Post. At approximately 11 AM on Sunday, they intercepted a Maruti Suzuki S-Presso.
The arrested individuals were identified as Kimnei (33), Dimkhothing (47), and Ngaiting (40), all residents of Khongjom in Manipur. A search conducted in the presence of independent witnesses, under Section 50 of the NDPS Act, led to the recovery of the heroin concealed within the soap boxes, which later tested positive for the substance.
A case has been formally registered at the Lumshnong Police Station under the NDPS Act, and an investigation is underway to trace the connections of this drug syndicate both backward and forward. SP Kumar has urged the public to come forward with any information regarding other individuals involved in this racket, assuring that the identities of informants will remain confidential and suitable rewards will be offered for assistance.
