Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated CP Radhakrishnan on his selection as the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate for the Vice Presidential election, set to take place on September 9. In a post on X, Modi highlighted Radhakrishnan’s dedication, humility, and intellect, noting his long-standing service and grassroots involvement in Tamil Nadu.
“In his long years in public life, Thiru CP Radhakrishnan Ji has distinguished himself with his dedication, humility, and intellect. Throughout his various positions, he has consistently prioritized community service and the empowerment of the marginalized. I am pleased that the NDA family has nominated him as our Vice Presidential candidate,” Modi stated.
Currently the 24th Governor of Maharashtra, Radhakrishnan took office on July 31, 2024. He has previously served as the Governor of Jharkhand and held roles as the Governor of Telangana and Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry. A seasoned BJP leader, he has been elected to the Lok Sabha from Coimbatore three times and has served as the Tamil Nadu BJP State President.
Earlier today, BJP National President and Union Minister JP Nadda announced plans to engage with opposition parties in an effort to secure an uncontested election for the Vice Presidential post. “We will reach out to the opposition to gain their support, aiming for an unopposed election for the Vice President’s position. Our senior leaders have been in contact with them, and we will continue these discussions,” he mentioned.
The Election Commission has scheduled the Vice Presidential election for September 9, with voting and counting to occur on the same day. Candidates have until August 21 to submit their nominations, while withdrawals will be accepted until August 25. The position became vacant following Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation on July 21, the first day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, citing health concerns.
