BTS RM Embraces His ‘Attention Seeker’ Label: Battling Criticism with Confidence
BTS member RM, also known as Kim Namjoon, recently sat down for an interview with Harper’s Bazaar Korea, marking his first photoshoot after completing military service. Dressed in a stylish Bottega Veneta outfit as the brand’s inaugural ambassador, RM expressed his excitement about the occasion, which he described as “an honour.” He took the opportunity to reflect on his life and journey so far, sharing heartfelt insights.
“Hey guys, I’ve got something to say, gather around,” RM started, reminiscent of how he would often engage his bandmates. He candidly acknowledged, “I’ve used some strong language before, and I’ve shouted too. But really, I was just trying to be funny.”
When discussing his childhood dreams, RM embraced his identity as an attention seeker, asserting that he never considered this trait a flaw. “I like to be in the spotlight. That’s the same,” he said. The rapper, who was affectionately nicknamed “Talk Box” as a child due to his storytelling habit, even entertained the idea of becoming a comedian. “I used to gather interesting stories from the internet and share them with my friends,” he recalled, emphasizing his love for public speaking and making people laugh.
As one of the world’s leading boy bands, BTS has millions of fans eagerly anticipating their upcoming album, set to release after an 18-month hiatus caused by mandatory military service. RM, as the leader, openly discussed the heavy expectations weighing on the group, which can sometimes feel mentally exhausting, prompting him to yearn for a simpler life. When asked about a phrase he holds dear, he stated, “Everything happens for a reason. God always gives us challenges according to our capacity.”
He elaborated on how he tries to adopt this mindset, using it as a source of strength during tough times. RM explained that he views challenging moments as opportunities to grow, believing that they come when one has the capacity to handle them. A staunch advocate of self-affirmation, he encouraged others, saying, “If you keep casting good spells on yourself, you can internalise those words. I hope you’ll give it a try.” Despite the immense pressure they face, BTS continues to uphold the values of their “Love Yourself” campaign, reinforcing the importance of self-acceptance and resilience.
