New Delhi, Aug 14: The Congress leadership expressed profound grief following a tragic cloudburst in Kishtwar district, Jammu and Kashmir, on Thursday, which resulted in at least 23 fatalities and left many individuals injured or missing. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, along with Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, conveyed their condolences.
Kharge shared his sorrow on X, stating, “I am extremely pained by the loss of several lives in the terrible cloudburst tragedy in Kishtwar, Jammu & Kashmir. My heart goes out to the families of the victims, and I express my deepest sympathies to each of them. My thoughts and prayers are with the injured and those searching for their missing family members.” He urged authorities to mobilize additional National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Armed Forces teams to enhance relief and rehabilitation efforts, emphasizing that Congress workers should extend every possible support to those affected.
Describing the incident as “extremely tragic,” Rahul Gandhi expressed, “The news of several deaths and many people missing due to the devastation caused by a cloudburst in Kishtwar is heartbreaking. I extend my deep condolences to the affected families and hope for the swift recovery of those who are missing. I call on the administration to expedite relief and rescue operations, and I ask Congress leaders and workers to work closely with them to provide all necessary assistance to those in need.”
Priyanka Gandhi characterized the event as “heart-wrenching.” She remarked, “The massive devastation in Kishtwar, resulting in the death of many and numerous others missing, is incredibly painful. May God grant peace to the departed souls. My deepest condolences are with the grieving families. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured and the safety of those who are missing. I encourage my Congress colleagues to offer every possible help to the victims and affected families.”
The cloudburst occurred in Chasoti, the last motorable village before the Machail Mata temple, between 12 noon and 1 p.m. This incident struck during a large annual pilgrimage gathering. Reports indicate that approximately 100 individuals sustained injuries and were transported to medical facilities as rescue operations continue.
