Brandon Blackstock’s Secret Romance with Ex-Assistant Revealed: A Heartbreaking Obituary
Brandon Blackstock, the ex-husband of Kelly Clarkson, passed away on August 7, 2025, at the age of 48 after battling melanoma, a serious form of skin cancer. Blackstock and Clarkson began their divorce proceedings in 2020, finalizing the process in 2022. Initially, Brandon served as Clarkson’s talent manager before their relationship developed into a romantic partnership. In a poignant revelation, it has come to light that in the days prior to his death, he was in a “loving” relationship with Brittney Marie Jones, who had previously been Clarkson’s assistant.
A week after his death, Blackstock’s obituary referred to Jones as his “partner in life and business.” The tribute highlighted that together, they had established a shared life, launching several companies, including The Valley View Rodeo in Bozeman, Montana. The obituary noted, “Brandon, along with his beautiful and loving partner in life and business, Brittney Marie Jones, started building a life, building companies, and working tirelessly to create Headwaters Livestock Auction and what will live on as his legacy, The Valley View Rodeo in Bozeman, Montana.”
Jones, according to her LinkedIn profile, had a history of working with both Clarkson and Blackstock. She served as Clarkson’s assistant from 2016 to 2018 before transitioning to Brandon’s talent company as an executive management assistant while still managing Clarkson’s calendar. In June 2020, the same month Clarkson filed for divorce, Jones reportedly relocated to Montana to work at Blackstock’s ranch, V Bar B Cattle Co.
Clarkson and Blackstock, who married in 2013, faced a tumultuous relationship that lasted until their divorce in 2020. They share two children, River, 11, and Remington, 9. The divorce was finalized in 2022 after a complicated custody battle. As part of the settlement, Clarkson retained the Montana ranch, although she primarily resides in New York for her career and show commitments. Meanwhile, Blackstock remained in Montana, where he and Jones established the rodeo in 2024.
Jones had previously been married to drummer Greg Goose LaPoint, with whom she celebrated their first wedding anniversary in September 2021, but they appear to have since parted ways, as LaPoint has begun dating someone new. Following Blackstock’s death, Jones’ father, Larry, paid tribute on Facebook, describing him as his daughter’s soulmate and expressing that he considered him a son. He wrote, “Yesterday we lost a good man Brandon Blackstock, my daughter’s soulmate, and I considered him my son. My sincere condolences to Brittney Jones and family. We’re sure going to miss your funny humor. R.I.P hoss!”
Despite their separation, Clarkson continued to support Blackstock, striving to be there for the father of her children during difficult times. She frequently took breaks from her hosting duties and even canceled a recent residency in Los Angeles. Clarkson is scheduled to resume her role in September with the new season of The Kelly Clarkson Show, where she will return as a guest. Sources have indicated that she was “devastated” for their children and remained protective of Blackstock after learning of his illness.
