Unveiling Dreams: Resorts World Sentosa’s CEO Shares Bold Expansion Plans for an Unmatched Adventure Experience

Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) is positioning itself for a significant comeback as it prepares for the renewal of its casino license in 2026. CEO Lee Shi Ruh shared insights with CNBC, asserting that the resort will be “ready” when the Singapore Gambling Regulatory Authority reviews its application. The agency previously renewed RWS’s casino license for an additional two years in November 2024, citing “unsatisfactory” tourism performance from 2021 to 2023, a reduction from the typical three-year term. This decision followed RWS’s announcement of a robust $6.8 billion Singapore dollars (approximately $5.3 billion) investment aimed at enhancing the integrated resort.

Despite the truncated license, Lee emphasized that the resort’s expansion initiatives remain steadfast. In 2025 alone, RWS unveiled two major attractions: Minion Land at Universal Studios Singapore and the newly developed Singapore Oceanarium, which replaces the former S.E.A. Aquarium. “This year is really a game-changing year for us,” Lee remarked, underscoring the company’s commitment to launching new attractions over the next several years, particularly through 2030.

The gaming regulatory body’s decision reflects RWS’s ongoing efforts to bolster its status as an enticing tourist destination. When asked about the specific focus areas, Lee highlighted a transformative vision to evolve Resorts World Sentosa into a premium lifestyle destination. She pointedly noted that shopping, once a primary draw for tourists in Asia, is being set aside in favor of immersive experiences. Lee stated, “Our focus is really into experiences,” indicating a clear shift towards attractions that cater to the desires of contemporary travelers.

The decision to replace the Madagascar-themed area with Minion Land was influenced by the universal appeal of the beloved “Despicable Me” characters. Lee explained that the iconic Minions resonate with a wide demographic across diverse regions due to their unique, universal language-Minionese-which combines elements from various languages, making them relatable to audiences globally.

In addition to expanding attractions, Resorts World Sentosa has ambitious plans to introduce new accommodations, including The Laurus, a luxurious hotel envisioned as a “collector’s home,” slated to open in late 2025. Furthermore, the integrated resort intends to launch Super Nintendo World within Universal Studios Singapore, as well as develop an elevated waterfront lifestyle complex. This complex will feature a 700-room hotel, scenic hiking trails, and a prominent 289-foot light sculpture, significantly enhancing the allure of the Greater Southern Waterfront.

While Lee refrained from elaborating on whether this lifestyle complex would include gaming facilities, the project represents a strategic move to elevate the resort’s appeal and engagement with visitors. As Resorts World Sentosa navigates these developments, the focus on enriching the tourist experience positions it as a notable player in Singapore’s competitive entertainment landscape.

With these bold plans, Resorts World Sentosa is set to redefine what it means to be a leisure destination in Singapore, aligning itself with evolving consumer trends while preparing for its crucial license renewal in the coming years.
