Tripura Urges Action: Report Needed on Environmental Pollution Prevention
The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has formally requested the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC), Agartala Smart City Limited (ASCL), and the Pollution Control Board to provide a report by August 29 on measures taken to combat severe environmental pollution in the region.
Justice Arindam Lodh, Chairperson of the THRC, stated that a complaint was lodged by Sujit Deb from D.C. Nagar, Mohanpur Sub-Division, regarding serious environmental degradation affecting areas such as Nepali Basti, Beltoli, Palpara, Damdamiya, and Sen Para. The complaint highlights that hazardous waste in these areas contributes to a proliferation of mosquitoes and flies, posing health risks to local residents.
In addition, the Commission noted ongoing waste dumping in the Battala area, where decaying fruits, fish, and other materials are causing persistent environmental issues that negatively impact the health of both commuters and residents. As part of its mandate, the Commission has deemed it essential to notify the AMC Commissioner and ASCL Administrator to take decisive action against such practices threatening environmental integrity.
The Commission has emphasized that pertinent authorities must safeguard the environment, vital for public health and well-being. Furthermore, they have informed the State Pollution Control Board of these issues, urging it to take serious measures. The Chairman of the State Pollution Control Board, Government of Tripura, has been included in the proceedings and is instructed to submit a report within the specified timeframe detailing actions taken to address the highlighted concerns.
