Urgent Call to Action: CPI(M) Demands Electoral Integrity Amid Vote Theft Controversy
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] has urged the Election Commission of India to restore public trust in the electoral process. In a statement issued on Friday, the CPI(M) called for the Election Commission to re-establish the confidence of citizens in the country’s electoral system. The party currently governs Kerala, is allied with the ruling party in Tamil Nadu, and serves as the primary opposition in Tripura.
According to reports from the Statesman, the CPI(M) Politburo expressed concerns regarding the neutrality of elections. It highlighted irregularities in the preparation of voter lists and alleged unethical activities during recent elections in several states.
Particularly, after allegations of voting irregularities surfaced in the recent elections in Maharashtra and Karnataka, the CPI(M) raised questions about the Election Commission’s impartiality. The party also questioned the SIR process in Bihar, which has raised doubts about the accuracy of voter lists.
The CPI(M) called on the Election Commission to conduct a thorough investigation into the allegations raised by opposition parties and to demonstrate its commitment to transparency and impartiality. Addressing the raised concerns adequately is deemed the responsibility of the Election Commission.
Notably, Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha and a Congress MP, has also questioned the Election Commission’s conduct regarding claims of “vote theft.” The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has dismissed Gandhi’s claims as baseless, asserting that the government does not interfere in the Election Commission’s work.
In response to Rahul Gandhi’s inquiries regarding CCTV footage, the Election Commission provided a surprising answer, stating that reviewing the CCTV footage from one lakh polling stations would take about one lakh days, equating to nearly 273 years, rendering any legal outcome impossible.
Furthermore, the Election Commission mentioned that CCTV footage is preserved only if a candidate files a petition in court regarding an electoral issue; otherwise, there is no justification for retaining that footage.
Amidst this backdrop, Rahul Gandhi raised concerns and questioned whether any directives were issued to destroy CCTV and video evidence from polling centers, or who ordered such actions.
