Urgent Call to Halt Israeli Military Control of Gaza: UN Rights Chief Warns for Humanity’s Sake!

A complete military takeover of the Gaza Strip must be immediately stopped, urged Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, following the Israeli security cabinet’s approval of plans for a full-scale military operation in the conflicted region. Türk emphasized that this development violates international law, referencing a ruling by the International Court of Justice, which mandates that Israel end its occupation and work towards a two-state solution that respects Palestinian self-determination.

He warned that any escalation in the ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel, which has already resulted in widespread devastation and the deaths of tens of thousands in Gaza, would lead to increased forced displacement, further casualties, and further humanitarian crises. “The war in Gaza must end now. And Israelis and Palestinians must be allowed to live side by side in peace,” Türk declared, urging the Israeli government to focus on the protection of civilians in Gaza by allowing unrestricted access to humanitarian aid.

Despite the urgency of the situation, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to deepen. Aid agencies have repeatedly highlighted that Israeli bombardments, mass evacuation orders, and tight restrictions on relief efforts have precipitated a dire humanitarian catastrophe. Even staff members from the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) have reported severe food shortages. Although Israel announced on July 27 that there would be daily military pauses in western Gaza to facilitate humanitarian responses, reports indicate that the amount of aid actually reaching those in need remains alarmingly low.

According to the UN human rights office, as of May 27, at least 1,373 Palestinians have died while seeking food, with 859 casualties occurring near the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation’s aid distribution points. Another 514 individuals lost their lives along food convoy routes, underlining the perilous conditions faced by those in Gaza.

The situation is further exacerbated by a lack of essential services and rising food insecurity. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO), warned that malnutrition is alarmingly widespread. He reported that, in July alone, nearly 12,000 children under five were identified as suffering from acute malnutrition, marking the highest monthly figure on record. This year, at least 99 malnutrition-related deaths have been reported, including 29 among children under five, though these figures are likely to be substantial underestimates.

Türk’s comments reflect the urgent need for concerted international action to mitigate the ongoing humanitarian disaster in Gaza. He called for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages held by Palestinian armed groups and the release of Palestinians arbitrarily detained by Israel. The call to allow unfettered access to humanitarian aid echoes a broader international demand for an end to violence and a focus on peace efforts that prioritize the well-being of civilians.

As the situation develops, the international community remains vigilant, advocating for a resolution that recognizes the rights and needs of both Israelis and Palestinians amidst a backdrop of profound suffering and loss. The pathway forward must prioritize human rights and uphold the principles of international law, ensuring that all parties work towards a sustainable and just peace.
