One of the exciting upcoming Xbox titles is Ninja Gaiden 4, a project born from a unique collaboration between developers. According to the directors, this collaboration has been pivotal in making the game a reality. Developed by PlatinumGames, the game sees oversight from Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja, with Xbox Game Studios Publishing handling its release.
Masakazu Hirayama, director and producer at Team Ninja, emphasized that without this collaboration, it would have been impossible to achieve what they have with Ninja Gaiden 4. He noted that while both companies specialize in action games, their differing design philosophies contributed to a richer final product, despite challenges in balancing their visions.
He explained the collaborative process, saying, “We had moments where we had to iron things out and debate the direction. We asked, ‘How can we incorporate PlatinumGames’ strengths into Ninja Gaiden while retaining the foundations at the same time?’” He highlighted Nakao’s influence, mentioning that he has been a long-time fan of Ninja Gaiden even before he became a developer, allowing them to share a common “Ninja Gaiden language.”
Nakao echoed Hirayama’s sentiments, revealing that many game elements emerged through discussions between their teams. “We wanted to ensure our distinct style was present in the game, which you would expect from PlatinumGames. Successfully combining our strengths is reflected in the gameplay experience,” he stated. Additionally, Nakao expressed admiration for the meticulousness Team Ninja implements in its titles, acknowledging his newfound appreciation for their level of responsiveness.
A noteworthy feature in the gameplay is Yakumo’s Bloodraven Form, enhancing attacks and altering weapon dynamics. During development, the team found that this ability had initially overshadowed other gameplay elements. Hirayama humorously recalled times during development when Bloodraven Form dominated encounters, necessitating a reassessment and balance within the game’s combat dynamics. “If you compare how Bloodraven Form functioned a year ago to now, it’s nearly unrecognizable,” he remarked.
Having experienced several hours of Ninja Gaiden 4, it’s evident that the teams have successfully achieved the delicate balance they aimed for. The game is set to launch on October 21, 2025, across Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC (Steam and Xbox PC), and PlayStation 5. As part of all Xbox first-party games, the standard edition will be available from day one on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass.
