Golaghat Police Capture 10th Suspect in Gelabil Moral Policing Case
Guwahati: The Golaghat police arrested the 10th suspect connected to the Barpathar Police Station moral policing case (Case No. 41/2025) on Friday. This case relates to the assault of two teenagers in the Gelabil area of Assam’s Golaghat district earlier this month.
The Golaghat Police announced on X, “Today, we have apprehended the 10th accused in the Barpathar PS moral policing case. We will enforce strict action as mandated by law.”
The incident occurred on August 1, when a group, reportedly with political ties, forcefully visited the homes of the teenagers in Gelabil. They dragged the victims outside, subjected them to physical assault, and even inflicted further pain by pouring salt and chili water on their wounds, documenting the abuse on video.
The footage quickly circulated online, drawing widespread condemnation from political figures, human rights organizations, and student groups. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Sarupathar MLA Biswajit Phukan demanded immediate action against those involved.
Follow-up investigations led to several arrests shortly after the incident. According to police reports, the attack stemmed from unfounded accusations against the victims, who faced allegations of theft and breaches of social conduct. The assailants took the law into their own hands, acting without any official inquiries or complaints.
Experts caution that similar events could persist unless stringent legal measures are implemented. However, the Golaghat Police have reassured the public that justice will prevail.
This case underscores the escalating worries surrounding moral policing and mob justice in Assam. The investigation remains active, with authorities continuing to monitor the situation closely.
