India Stands Firm: Calls Out EU and U.S. on Trade with Russia Amid Trump’s Threat of Devastating Tariffs!

Students from the Gurukul School of Art recently displayed a poster featuring Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former U.S. President Donald Trump in a demonstration outside their school, underscoring rising tensions in international trade relations. Trump’s recent social media post threatened India with increased tariffs, adding to existing penalties imposed on the purchase of Russian oil and military equipment.

India has accused the U.S. and the European Union of unfairly targeting it for importing Russian oil, following Trump’s threats of substantially higher tariffs. The Indian foreign ministry stated that its oil imports began only after traditional sources were redirected to Europe amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict that intensified in 2022. The ministry further criticized the EU and the U.S. for their own trade relationships with Russia, pointing out that their activities are not driven by essential national interests as is the case for India.

According to data from the European Commission, EU bilateral trade with Russia was valued at €67.5 billion in 2024, while trade in services reached €17.2 billion in 2023. In striking contrast, India’s bilateral trade with Russia soared to a record $68.7 billion for the year ending March 2025, nearly six times the $10.1 billion reported before the pandemic. The EU has seen a reduction in trade with Russia, dropping by nearly 74% from €257.5 billion in 2021, illustrating a significant shift in the region’s economic landscape.

Trump’s threats emerged after accusations that India was exploiting discounted Russian oil for profit. Underlining the economic implications, he indicated a potential 25% tariff on Indian exports, although specifics were not provided. The U.S. President’s critique highlighted that, since the onset of the Ukraine conflict, India has emerged as a major importer of Russian oil, escalating from less than 100,000 barrels per day to over 1.8 million barrels per day by 2023, as reported by the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

India has defended its energy strategy, with Energy Minister Hardeep Singh Puri stating that its oil purchases help stabilize global prices. He argued that if nations had ceased buying Russian oil, prices could have skyrocketed to $130 per barrel, a situation discouraged by U.S. officials at the time. Recent constraints on U.S. imports from Russia have also been noted, with American trade dropping to $5.2 billion in 2024 from nearly $36 billion in 2021.

India’s response reflects broader concerns over national interests and economic stability. Acknowledging the complexity of the geopolitical landscape, Rachel Ziemba, an expert at the Center for a New American Security, indicated that while some of India’s concerns are valid, the nation finds itself entangled in challenging trade dynamics.

In conclusion, as these nations navigate a fraught international environment, India remains poised to assert its economic security amid an evolving geopolitical landscape. The ongoing discourse highlights the complexities of global trade, energy needs, and national policy, suggesting that sober negotiations are essential to avoid further escalation.
